5E's Instructional Model




A model for structuring teaching and learning which includes engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate. Based on the constructive approach it to build on past knowledge and experience to scaffolding new learning. Integrate process concept skills.

1) Engage - generates interest
                    access prior knowledge
                    connect to past knowledge
                    focus attention
                    stimulate thinking

2) Explore - loosely struct ed hands on experiences
                     examine their thinking
                     establish relationship and understanding

3) Explain - introduce content
                    present terms and vocabulary
                    distinguish skills and processes
                    articulate what they have observe and experienced

4) Elaborate - make macro level of conclusion
                       build connection
                       high on Blooms's (how do you know?, why do you know?, why should you care?)

5) Evaluate (self-evaluation)  - assess their own understanding
                                                  demonstrate understanding
                                                  apply understanding to unique problem situation
